According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ data, there are nearly 27.1 million refugees worldwide. In addition to this, refugees are twice as likely to be unemployed.
Marriott International announced its plans to hire more than 1500 refugees in Europe by 2026. The announcement was made by Marriot President and CEO Anthony Capuano during the Tent Partnership for Refugees European Summit.
This isn’t the first time Marriot International chose hiring the untapped labor force. Marriott has already provided jobs to more than 970 refugees in different parts of Europe. Also, in the past, Marriot committed to hiring more than 1,500 refugees in the United States by 2025.
He announced, “Marriott’s goal to hire an additional 1500 refugees in Europe builds on the work we’re doing to promote opportunities for refugees in the US and highlights our steadfast commitment to put people first and provide economic opportunity for refugees and underrepresented populations.”
Capuano said, “At Marriott International, we believe in being a force for good and making a positive sustainable impact in the communities where we do business.” He added, “Across Europe, this has included support for refugees from Ukraine since the start of the war.”
Marriott International’s Long-Standing Commitment to Helping Refugees
Marriott has been helping refugees for the past years. It has a longstanding partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to both train and absorb refugees as part of its workforce. Since 2016, Marriott helped train around 1000 refugees in the United States providing them with the necessary hospitality and workforce skills through their Hospitality Link program among other initiatives.
For this year, Marriott heads to Tucson, Arizona, and Denver to support IRC’s Hospitality Link program. The goal is to help the IRC to come up with high-quality job readiness programs designed for refugees.
Marriott also launched a careers website where refugees can search and apply for positions open in the United States.
