When you are first planning your trip, you will be looking at many options for hotels, flights, car rentals, and other travel-oriented logistics. It can be confusing and time-consuming to consider all these options separately, and you may be tempted to just choose an all-inclusive travel package and be finished. However, by taking the time to truly examine all your options, you will be able to plan your trip at a cost you can truly afford.

It Isn’t Always Cheaper

Just like any bargain deal, you have to do the math to decide if a bundled travel package is actually going to save you money. When you are looking at multi-packs or bulk packages in stores, sometimes you will find that the smaller items are less in price. Some travel packages that are bundled are cheaper in totality than the items purchased separately, and sometimes they are not. You should also consider whether you would have chosen a cheaper flight, hotel or tour separately on your own from different vendors or deals. Buying into a more expensive hotel stay than you normally would consider just to get a cheaper flight may not really save you any money.

Paying for What You Don’t Need

You should always remember that even with bargains, the aim of the company is to sell you something. Bundling like this is a technique called cross selling. Your job is to decide if these items are anything you really want or need. For instance, many cruise lines offer deals that include “onboard credit of such-and-such amount.” When this is several hundred dollars, your first reaction may be that this is a great perk. But is it really? In reality, this is just an amount held in reserve for items you may purchase, such as souvenirs, food, and drink. If you were not going to purchase these things anyway, then this is not saving you any money.

Additional Cost to Implement

Another consideration is if taking advantage of a bundled package may cause you to expend extra money to access. Many times, a travel package will require you to depart from a location that is further away than you anticipated or depend on some type of connecting transport that you will need to purchase. The gas to get there should be computed, as well as any parking or port fees. Bus, subway, and train prices are factors, as well as private transportation such as Uber, Lyft, or taxis.

Once you have examined all your travel options, you can book your trip with all the options that you truly desire. Clicked, paid, done! Now all you have to do is anticipate and wait for the fun to commence.
