American Airlines’ “Lobster Roll” Looks So Gross It Went Viral

Travel blogger gets served dish on American vaguely resembling signature sandwich

One travel blogger is speaking out against his business class experience aboard American Airlines in questioning just how much lobster was in their lobster roll. Speaking to Gothamist, blogger Ben Schlappig said the catering experience was part of a “downhill trend since the merger [with US Airways].”

Schlappig detailed the experience on his blog, complete with pictures of the questionable dish. According to his account, the lobster roll contained “…about as much lobster meat on the sandwich as you’d get in a tub of butter.” As for the taste? “It sort of tasted like they took soggy pieces of bread and then spread butter with tiny particles of lobster on it,” he wrote. To make matters worse, when asking if he received the meal in mistake, a flight attendant told him it was the “first class” version of the meal.

The blogger attributes the poor service as a victim of airline merging. With differing priorities, Schlappig says the customer dining experience has become secondary at American.

“In 2013 American probably had the best catering between Delta, American, and United, but since then Delta and United have made significant improvements while American has focused on cost-cutting,” Schlappig told Gothamist. “I guess the net effect is that American has the worst on-board catering of the big three.”

When it comes to the best shellfish in first class, Schlappig agrees with FlyerTalkers that the lobster thermidor aboard Singapore Airlines may be the best in the air. The lobster thermidor aboard Thai Airways has also received positive reviews, while flyers have cautioned against the dish aboard Eva Air.
