An American Airlines cleaning crew discovered what appeared to be a dead human fetus inside the bathroom of an aircraft at New York City‘s LaGuardia Airport Tuesday morning, a spokesman for the carrier confirmed to CNN.
The plane arrived from Charlotte, North Carolina late Monday night and was scheduled for cleaning around 5 a.m. local time Tuesday.
American spokesman Justin Franco told CNN that the cleaning crew immediately reached out to their manager, who then contacted law enforcement.
“As we continue to learn more about this tragic and sensitive situation, we are actively cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation,” American Airlines said in a statement.
The airport warned of potential delays as a result of the grisly discovery Tuesday morning.

The Queens District Attorney’s office is looking into the matter and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York is also investigating.
