TSA Extends Limit on Carry-On Powder to International Flights

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is expanding its carry-on limit on powders to international flights bound for the U.S. at the end of the month.

While the carry-on limit on powders of 350 milliliters or roughly 12 ounces (the size of a soda can) has been enforced on domestic flights dating back to last summer, the TSA is requesting foreign airports adopt the same guidelines for international flights en route to the U.S. beginning June 30.

Moving forward, passengers will need to check powders exceeding the aforementioned limit or risk being put through secondary screening. Those traveling with cosmetics, spices, protein powder and similar items will want to double check the amount before heading to the airport.

“These measures are part of TSA’s efforts to stay ahead of threats, keep passengers safe and constantly increase capabilities through a layered approach to security,” agency spokesman Mike England wrote in an email to the New York Times, pointing out that powders such as fentanyl and pepper powder “could be used to irritate or harm aircraft passengers and aircrew if released during flight.”

According to CNN, a TSA official cited last year’s foiled terror plot to bring explosives aboard an Etihad Airways flight as a factor in the new focus on powder.

“Improvised Explosive Devices still pose the greatest threat to commercial aviation,” added England.

The TSA notes that most international airlines have been enforcing the 12-ounce limit already so the hope is that the changes won’t catch travelers off guard and lead to longer security lines this summer.

The expanded limits come just months after TSA Chief David Pekoske stated the importance of extending security airlines/tsa-is-taking-security-beyond-checkpoints.html” target=”_self” rel=”nofollow”>beyond airport checkpoints.
