Norwegian Cruise CEO Frank Del Rio thinks that the latest CDC guidance is “unfair”. The health agency issued technical guidance for the cruise industry. With the latest CDC guidance, the agency wants to show its commitment to kickstarting the industry’s operation by mid-summer.

However, Del Rio thinks that the requirements on the cruise industry are much tougher than any other industry. He said that “the unfair treatment that the industry has had to endure for over a year continues”. He added that “It’s got to stop, it’s unfair, it’s un-American and certainly in contradiction with the goals set forth by President Biden”.

For the Norwegian Cruise Line, its CEO Frank Del Rio thinks that they can’t sail by July or even in August. He said that “I seriously doubt we will be able to stand up a vessel out of a US port in July. August is also in jeopardy and it’s all because of the disjointed guidelines from the CDC”.

He described CDC’s updated guideline as “anything but a clear path to restarting”.

Updated CDC Guidance

According to the latest CDC guidance, cruises need to start simulated trips and then apply for a conditional sailing certificate. Plus, there will be health protocols in place.  Cruises can skip simulated trips if they can meet the number of fully vaccinated passengers and crew.

Del Rio said that “We are going to vaccinate 100% of everyone onboard our vessel. We are dumbfounded”. However, Norwegian Cruise will operate internationally in Greece, Spain, Italy, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica.

The health agency was forced to update its guidance after the collective efforts of the cruise industry and by lawmakers. Cruises threatened to look for other homeports if they won’t be allowed by mid-summer. Also, Florida and Alaska tried to sue the federal government. Fortunately, the agency compromised with the cruise industry. Though it is going to be a different experience cruising during a pandemic, this move can start to revive one of the most affected industries during the pandemic.
