Southwest Airlines is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It has all the reasons to celebrate considering what the airline has to go through in the last 15 months. And part of its celebration is the “Wanna Get Away Day” on June 18th. Customers will have the chance to win a total of 50 million Rapid Rewards bonus points. The term “Wanna Get Away” has been used by the brand in 1996.

Travelers interested in joining will have to go to Southwest’s official website and see the terms and conditions. In a statement by Southwest Vice President Bill Tierney, “It’s our 50th Anniversary and we are ready to celebrate and thank our customers”. He added that “In true Southwest Spirit, we are turning our 50th anniversary into Wanna Get Away Day”.

Wanna Get Away Day will be celebrated for the entire month of June. Employees and travelers will also have the chance to have a photo-op opportunity in their 24 airport gate areas in the US. There will also be Heart Carts in more than 40 locations on June 18 where customers have the chance to get interesting prizes. Among its prizes include Retro Hostess Build-A-Bear, a retro hostess scarf, shirts, and more.

Struggling in the Pandemic

Southwest struggled with the rest of the airline industry in the past year. However, the recent months showed signs of recovery for the travel industry as more people are now comfortable traveling once again. Unfortunately, one of the most challenging things that airlines have to face is the number of unpleasant travelers that even resulted in violent attacks against flight attendants.

Because of this problem, Southwest Airlines suspended its plans to serve alcohol during its flights. Southwest previously had plans of serving beer and wine on flights to and from Hawaii on June 24. But for now, this plan is going to have to wait. A Southwest spokesperson even said that there is “no timetable” for the return of alcoholic beverages.
