Spirit Airlines Flight Cancellations Enter 4th Day

Spirit Airlines flight cancellations continue on Wednesday. This extends the massive delays and cancelations into its fourth day.

Spirit Airlines, the airline popularly known for yellow planes and cheap flights, canceled 187 flights on Wednesday. That is equivalent to 30% of its scheduled flights.

Spirit Airlines’ flight cancelations started Sunday. It was a combination of summer storms and technology problems. Also, some airline experts are saying that there’s a staffing shortage as airlines struggle to meet the uptick in domestic travel demand.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, the agency screened 2.2 million people on Sunday. Also, this was the largest number of travelers recorded since the pandemic started last year.

Spirit Airlines Flight Cancellations  and Refunds

The airline canceled 42% of its flights Monday and 61% on Tuesday. For passengers dealing with canceled flights, they can get a refund according to the Department of Transportation rules. However, passengers who are on a tight budget may have to wait for another Spirit Airlines flight. That’s because last-minute tickets may cost a lot more especially during the summer travel season.

According to Spirit, the fastest way to get a refund is by using their online chat. Spirit Airlines spokesperson in a statement said that “We understand how frustrating it is for our guests when plans change unexpectedly”. Sutton added that “We’re working to provide refunds for cancellations and, when possible, to re-accommodate our guests”.

In the airline’s latest statement, the airline said that it is “working around the clock” to solve the problems.

The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, the union representing 4,500 Spirit flight attendants, is meeting with Spirit executives on Tuesday. They are meeting airline CEO Ted Christie and COO John Bendoritis to discuss how to restore the airline’s operations.

According to the union, “Spirit management has begun treating this irregular operation as a hurricane recovery and strategically canceled flights around the system with the possibility of a system reset”.
