Trump Hotels Hacked – Again

So much for cyber security – Trump’s own propertys are constantly getting hacked in an effort to obtain credit card information.

For the third time in three years, 14 Trump properties have had security breaches exposing customer credit card information. This current breach lasted from August 2016 to March 2017 the company said in a notice, though the incident did not directly affect the systems at Trump Hotels. Rather, Sabre Hospitality Solutions, the system Trump Hotels uses to book reservations, was the target.

According to the company notice, personal information hacked includes “cardholder name, payment card number, card expiration date, and potentially card security code. In some cases, the unauthorized party also was able to access guest name, email, phone number, address, and other information. Information such as Social Security, passport, and driver’s license number was not accessed.”

Trump Hotels learned of the hack on June 5 and has not commented beyond the notice posted online. The affected properties can be found here.

Hotel chains are increasingly becoming a target for hackers looking for easy access to personal information.

“Why are hackers targeting hotelss? Well, because they’re a good target,” Peter W. Singer, senior fellow at the New America Foundation, told the Washington Post. “Then you look at Trump’s propertys, and they’re obviously a highly symbolic target. If more people are staying there in an attempt to curry favor with the government, the fishing pool of targets is certainly greater than it was prior to November.”

Trump Hotels’ systems were previously breached in May 2014, November 2015, and March 2016.

“It seems very negligent that this could happen a number of times,” Justin Cappos, associate professor of systems and security at New York University, told the Washington Post. “These patterns of oversight are a huge problem.”
