2018 Was London Heathrow Airport’s “Best Ever Year”

From peak passenger figures to new routes and connections plus a strong financial performance, 2018 was a record-breaking year for London Heathrow Airport (LHR). LHR CEO John Holland-Kaye praised the airport’s performance and praised its employees for helping the airport to achieve this accolade.

From peak passenger figures to new routes and connections and a strong financial performance, 2018 was a record-breaking year for London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

In a statement released on Thursday, LHR announced that, in terms of passenger figures, the year ending December 31, 2018 was “the best year in its history” with 80.1 million travelers passing through the facility.

It has also revealed that both its domestic and international connections are thriving. In fact, during the course of the year, LHR has doubled the number of connections that it has with China and now offers services to six additional cities. This increase sees the facility offer Europe’s only connection to Shenzhen, China’s tech hub.

On the domestic front, the airport once more commenced offering services to the Scottish city of Inverness and will introduce a service to Newquay – a city in the southwest of England – this spring.

The airport also fared well on its financial front, bolstered by increased retail and passenger demand plus heightened investor interest in LHR.

In the announcement, LHR also said that it will soon be releasing more detailed plans on its upcoming expansion.

Offering his comments, John Holland-Kaye, LHR’s CEO said, “2018 was the best ever year at Heathrow. We were voted best airport in Western Europe by passengers, while continuing to drive down costs…”.

“We remain on track to open the new runway in 2026. I am very proud of the outstanding work of 76,000 colleagues across the airport, who are delivering for Britain,” he added.
