American Airlines has revealed plans to make Cancun International Airport the hub of its Caribbean operations.
According to a report in the Riviera Maya News, Jose Maria Giraldo, the general director of AA in Mexico, highlighted the growing importance of Quintana Roo as a travel destination and indicated that the carrier plans to grow the number of flights it operates from Cancun.

“Mexico is the most important market for American Airlines outside the United States. In South America, we have 255 flights per week, but in Mexico, we almost triple this figure,” he said.
Giraldo also plans to beef up operations in Los Cabos, another popular tourist destination and strengthen its partnership with Interjet to better position itself in Mexico.
The AA network will reach 22 destinations in Mexico by the end of 2018. New service to Oaxaca will also begin on November 19, 2018. In June of 2019, AA will begin service between Durango and Dallas and routes from Dallas and Chicago to Cancun are also on the table.
