Delta to Launch Weather Forecasting Tool

Delta will soon launch a weather forecasting system and it’s expected to help operations teams, customer care representatives, and customers.

MORE Airlines & Airports

Called the Weather Information Tool, Delta describes it as a “new, interactive forecasting system [that] will be used to help track advancing weather data in one centralized location and better inform operations teams of how the airline is managing and monitoring irregular operations (IROPs).”

With the tool, operations leaders will have the latest information on weather and how it could impact flights. The tool consolidates information from four different weather models and puts them into one platform specific to each airport.

It also offers a five-day forecast page of daily weather and tropical systems around domestic and international airports. Delta’s teams will monitor the weather during hourly intervals and alert hubs and major airports in their network when need be.

The tool will be able to interpret precipitation type and levels, snow accumulation, cloud height, and visibility along flight routes and near airports that Delta flies to and from.

Travelers may also be able to reap the benefits of this new tool eventually. Delta plans to offer alerts to customers and customer service agents on weather and airlines/what-really-causes-weather-delays.html” target=”_self” rel=”nofollow”>how it could impact certain flights.

“The Weather Information Tool will be a game changer for Delta and the Meteorology team,” said Stephanie Klipfel, Manager of Delta Meteorology in a statement. “It will give us enhanced forecasting capabilities through concise, synchronized weather information which will allow the airline to make more precise predictions, increase safety and minimize potential delays for our customers.”

Delta will have a soft launch of this new system in mid-November, and it should be integrated across the Delta systems by early next year.
