SFO Eyes Exclusive VIP Terminal for Wealthy Travelers

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is planning to introduce a VIP terminal for affluent travelers. SFO is officially seeking bidders to build a new private luxury terminal that will let commercial airline passengers skip the long TSA lines, and be chauffeured directly to their aircraft.

VIP Experience for Passengers

The proposed VIP terminal would be located near Signature Aviation, about six miles from the airport, according to SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel. The terminal will feature its own TSA screening area.

Travelers would have access to luxury lounges and private guest suites before being transported by vehicle across the tarmac directly to their aircraft.

“I would say that, you know, the Jeff Bezos of the world, they already have their own aircraft. They already have a process in place. They don’t need a product like this,” Yakel said. “This is more for people that don’t have their own airplane that still fly commercial but want to pay for an elevated experience. That’s really the niche we’re trying to hit here,” he added.

The proposed facility would span 34,582 square feet and could begin operations in 2028. This would add to the airport’s growing lineup of premium amenities. Earlier this year, United, SFO’s largest airline, opened its largest West Coast lounge at the airport.

An Untapped Market?

Passengers seeking the VIP experience would pay between $800 and $1,800. Despite the high price tag, some travelers believe there is demand for the service.

“Now we see the TSA lines longer than the regular lines,” Peri Subrahmanya from Foster City said. “So, I feel, especially in the Bay Area with the kind of people, the demographic I think the price tag probably is not the issue. So people will be willing to pay for the service if it is helping them save time. It’s all about, especially when you’re a business owner or if you’re a frequent flier, time is money.”

Similar terminals already operate at Los Angeles International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Bidders interested in SFO’s VIP terminal project can submit proposals between September 30 and October 7.
