United States Continues to Be a Growth Market for Norwegian Air

  • Picture of TJS News TJS News

Though the airline is scaling back its North American growth frenzy, the United States will continue to be a major expansion priority for Norwegian Air.

USA Today reported that the airline will be shifting somewhat away from adding new routes and will instead focus on increasing frequencies on routes that it already flies.

MORE Airlines & Airports

“For the time being, we need to add more frequencies,” Norwegian CEO Bjorn Kjos said, according to the news publication.

With that said, the company is still implementing 14 new U.S.—Europe routes that had already been made public by the airline, among them nonstop flights from this country to such European destinations as Amsterdam, Madrid and Milan.

Additional routes that have launched this year include: Oakland to Rome; Newark to Paris Charles de Gaulle; Chicago O’Hare to London Gatwick; Austin to London Gatwick; Denver to Paris Charles de Gaulle; Oakland to Paris Charles de Gaulle; Boston to Paris Charles de Gaulle; New York JFK to Amsterdam; Los Angeles to Madrid; New York JFK to Madrid;

Upcoming routes slated to begin this year (all during October) are Orlando to Stockholm; Fort Lauderdale to Madrid; Fort Lauderdale to Rome and Tampa to London.

Most of the routes are flown on the airline’s new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The airline’s CEO also told USA Today that he’s optimistic about adding more flights via Newburgh, in upstate New York.

“I think we will fly more into Newburgh,” Kjos said, without elaborating. “Newburgh is doing very well.”

Norwegian’s decision to offer flights from the regional airport just outside Manhattan was a turning point for a struggling airport that had trouble attracting high-profile routes.

The airline offers routes to Ireland and the United Kingdom from Newburgh. What’s more, periodic sale fares on those flights often mean they cost less than $70 each way.

Also noteworthy, Norwegian recently began ticket sales for its newest international offering in Argentina. The airline will begin flying domestically there via routes from Buenos Aires to Bariloche, Córdoba, Iguazú, Mendoza, Neuquén, and Salta. It was already flying from Buenos Aires to London.
