What You Need to Know Before Renting a Car on Vacation

  • Picture of The Jet Set The Jet Set

Many people have had to cancel vacation plans this year, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. This has left a lot of us itching to travel again, anxiously awaiting the time when it’s safe to do so. One of the benefits of that extra time is the opportunity to carefully plan out and save for your next vacation. Among the many factors to consider is how you’re going to get around. Rental cars are a popular option, but there are some things you need to know before you do so.

Rental Car Insurance

You are typically legally obligated to carry car insurance in the United States. While rental cars are one of the only exceptions to this, it’s still a good idea to be insured. There are a few options at your disposal for getting the necessary coverage. You may have rental car insurance built into your own private car insurance policy. Depending on the benefits associated with your credit card, they may offer you coverage as well. The company you’re renting the car from will also have insurance coverage options as well. Make sure you read through your own policies carefully. If you’re already covered, there’s little sense in paying for additional insurance.

Travel Restrictions

There are more reasons than just understanding insurance coverage to carefully read through policies and agreements when it comes to renting a car. Some rental vehicles may have travel restrictions that you could be penalized for violating. If you have daily mileage limits, you could incur fees for going beyond those. You can usually travel between states with rental cars, but the same may not apply to international travel. For example, one-way car rentals usually can’t be driven into Mexico. These are important factors to be aware of before you sign the agreement to avoid unnecessary problems with your plans.

Damage Liability

You are responsible for any damage done to the vehicle during the terms of your rental agreement. As such, it’s important to drive carefully and defensively to avoid getting into any accidents and damaging the vehicle. Of course, sometimes the damage has already been done. Make sure you carefully inspect the vehicle before you drive off with it, noting any existing damage so you aren’t held responsible for it after you return it.

There are plenty of benefits associated with renting a car to get around on a vacation, but there are some things you need to know about this option as well. Figure out how you’re going to handle insurance on the rental, be aware of any travel restrictions, and understand your damage liability. This can help you be prepared for renting a car so you can enjoy the benefits of doing so.
