Carnival Corporation Touts Sustainability Achievements

  • Picture of TJS News TJS News

Carnival Corporation & plc (“Carnival”) has released its eighth annual sustainability report, entitled “Sustainability from Ship to Shore,” The report cites impressive accomplishments in 2017.

Namely, a 25 percent carbon reduction achieved three years ahead of schedule. Carnival is also on track to meet nine other 2020 sustainability goals.

The company is charting a course guided by the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It’s a framework for identifying environmental management, energy efficiency, health, safety and wellbeing objectives.

“We recognize that to be a responsible global organization and good corporate citizen, we need to have sustainability ingrained in all aspects of our operation across our nine global cruise line brands and more than 100 ships,” said Bill Burke, chief maritime officer for Carnival. “We are committed to consistently exceeding the expectations of our guests for great vacations, but we are also deeply committed to being a model for sustainable tourism throughout the world. It is through the dedication of our passionate and diverse workforce that we are able to make such great strides in every aspect of our operations. We congratulate each of our 120,000 employees for helping us achieve and exceed our carbon reduction goal well ahead of schedule.”

MORE Cruise Line & Cruise Ship

Carnival announced its 2020 sustainability goals in 2015. They include carbon footprint reduction, improvement of air emissions and water use efficiency, reduction of waste generation and support for guests, crew members and local communities.

The company has also made notable strides with its Liquified Natural Gas (“LNG”) initiatives. At present, LNG is one of the most environmentally-friendly and low-emission fuels available. Carnival received the Lloyd’s List Americas 2017 Cleaner Safer Seas Solutions Award for its commitment to LNG. In 2017, the company also welcomed the second cruise ship in the world powered by LNG while in port. The dual-fueled AIDAperla began LNG operations in three European ports. She’s the sister ship to dual-fueled AIDAprima, which debuted in 2016.

In December 2018, AIDAnova will debut as the first fully LNG-powered cruise ship. Six additional Carnival ships generating all their power from LNG will be in operation by 2022. They’ll sail for the AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and P&O Cruises (UK) brands.

Two next-generation LNG-powered cruise ships on order for Carnival Cruise Line will be homeported in North America. They’re set for debut in 2020 and 2022.

Carnival is the world’s largest leisure travel company with a brand portfolio that includes Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, P&O Cruises (Australia), Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises, P&O Cruises (UK) and Cunard.
