US Coast Guard Ends Search for 30-Year-Old Passenger Who Jumped Off Carnival Cruise

On Monday night, the US Coast Guard ended its search for a passenger who jumped off a Carnival cruise ship. According to the US Coast Guard, the 30-year-old passenger was Jaylen Hill.

What Happened to Jaylen Hill?

Jaylen Hill was onboard Carnival Elation, scheduled on a four-day Bahamas cruise. On Sunday afternoon, the 30-year-old was captured in a surveillance video jumping over the railing.

The cruise line said that “The crew was notified by his traveling companion late (Sunday) afternoon about his missing status after he had not been seen all day.” According to the Coast Guard, Hill went missing approximately 95 east of the coast of Melbourne.

On Monday night, the Coast Guard announced that it is calling off the search for Hill. Petty Officer Eric Rodriguez said “We offer our deepest condolences to the Hill family. Our crews take our life saving mission very seriously. Any time we can’t bring a loved one home to their family is a pain we all feel.”

Unfortunately, despite covering 1,374 miles, rescuers failed to recover Hill. The rescue team used the 87-foot cutter Tarpon from St. Petersburg, a Hercules plane from Clearwater, and an Ocean Sentry aircraft from Miami.

Man Overboard

Since 2022, there were a total of six passengers that went overboard on a Carnival Cruise Line ship. There was even one case that the FBI is looking into. It was a case of a 35-year-old passenger who fell into the water after leaning over the railing of his stateroom balcony.

From 2009 to 2019, Cruise Lines International Association reported a total of 212 overboard cases. Of the total number of overboard cases, rescuers only saved 48 people.

There’s a law that requires ships to have the necessary safety precautions to avoid these incidences. The 2010 Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Law states that cruise ships need to have 42-inch guard rails and man-overboard detection systems. Unfortunately, not all cruise ships developed a reliable and automatic man-overboard detection system that uses thermal cameras and radars.
