If you are an aspiring world traveler, it is important not only to know where you want to go and what you want to do, but what you should and shouldn’t bring. When traveling to foreign countries, there are certain items that you may not be able to bring back to the U.S. upon your return. Keep these items in mind as you are packing and buying souvenirs on vacation.
Dangerous Objects
While visiting foreign countries, you may be tempted to bring back fun cultural souvenirs such as daggers, axes or machetes. These make for great decorations and memories, however, items such as these that could be classified as dangerous weapons will not be allowed back into the country. Other dangerous items that you won’t be able to travel with include explosives, guns, tear gas, pepper spray, Tasers, etc.
Foods
As you’re planning for food souvenirs and packing snacks and treats to enjoy on your flights and during your travels, keep in mind that there are some food items that will not be able to make it past the U.S. border. Packaged foods that contain meat or eggs, like noodles with sauce, cannot be imported. Some fruits and vegetables can be biological risks that cause illnesses and other issues and are therefore banned from importation. However, some different plants or seeds can be brought through borders if they are declared and backed up by a special permit. Wildlife
There are many different kinds of fish and wildlife that cannot be imported from foreign countries without certain permits and permissions. Especially if the species is endangered, their importation is generally prohibited. Even animal products, such as the ivory of Asian and African elephants for example, cannot be brought into the U.S. There is a department that you can contact called the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service if you have any questions about any wildlife or fish that you want to import.
Whether you are planning to depart on a trip or returning from your adventures and traveling, keep in mind that there are certain rules that define what you can and cannot bring back into the U.S. Be sure that you review the TSA and U.S.A. borderline guidelines before making purchases on your vacations to ensure that you will be able to bring them home with you. By doing so, you’ll be able to enjoy your trip without worrying about spending money on souvenirs that will get confiscated at the border.
