What to Check Before Traveling Overseas

International travel can be both exciting and a little nerve-wracking, especially for those who have never traveled abroad before. The trip itself is a lot easier than you may think, but you have a lot to do to ensure that you are prepared. Here are three things to check before traveling overseas.

Visa Requirements

Many countries require non-citizens to obtain a visa specifically for their country. This should not be confused with your passport. Your passport verifies your citizenship, while your visa endorses your legal entry into the destination country for a specified amount of time. You must apply for your visa separately from your passport.

Depending on the country you are traveling to you might have to pay some significant fees, so be ready for that. Visa processing times also vary, with some taking as little as three weeks and others taking several months. It is a good idea to apply for your visa as soon as you know your travel details.

Health Measures

Depending on which country you are traveling to, there may be specific health measures that need to be completed before departure. Many of these health measures are for your personal safety. The last thing you want is to contract an illness or disease that is rare in the United States but prevalent in your destination country. Consult with your doctor a month or two before your departure date to allow enough time to get the vaccinations and medications that you need.

On the other hand, some health measures are enforced by the country you are traveling to. For example, many countries still require some sort of Covid-19 documentation to enter the country. This isn’t likely to change any time soon. Millions of cases of COVID-19 are still reported and people suffer from extended symptoms.

Passport Expiration Date

This should be a no-brainer, but realizing your passport is expired just before setting out on an international trip is far too common to omit it. As soon as you know you will be traveling internationally, check your passport to be sure it isn’t expired.

Better yet, check it now and set a reminder to renew your passport 9 months before it expires! It is also important to check the passport requirements for the country you are visiting. Some countries have requirements for how soon after departure your passport can expire.

International travel is incredibly exciting. However, it also involves quite a bit of homework. As soon as you know where you are going, check the country’s requirements online. Work through them one by one and stay organized so that your trip can go off without a hitch!
