Outdoor Activities You Can Do in the Mountains

The mountains will inspire you with amazing views of nature and invigorate you with fresh, clean air. Surrounded by nature, you can enjoy your favorite outdoor recreation on a weekend getaway or vacation. Fishing and camping are fun, but if you’re bursting with energy, try some more advanced mountain sports.

Ride ATVs

Riding an all-terrain vehicle through the bumps and dips of hilly terrain is an adventure like none other. Many state parks and privately-owned facilities from Alaska to Maine, and from California to Virginia, offer hundreds of ATVs, from beginner to advanced skill levels. Depending on location, you might ride over sand dunes, rocky trails, muddy paths, or alongside rivers and lakes.

Many sites require you to bring your own ATV, but rental offers are also available in some parks. Most facilities have regulations about types of vehicles allowed, speed limits, ages of riders, and acceptable use of trails. In some states, helmets are required by law.

Go Rafting

You can find water rafting sites just about anywhere there are mountains and streams. This exhilarating sport allows you to soak in nature (literally!) and test your strength and endurance. On the river, you’ll get up-close views you can’t find anywhere else. Inflatable, multi-person rafts are most often used, but kayaks, pontoon rafts, and motorized rafts are seen in some areas.

Whether you’re an experienced white water rafter or a first-time paddler, you can find a water route suitable for your skill level, but even the easy routes can be challenging. White water rafting carries some risks but it’s safer with an instructor. Learn the safety tips before you go.

Learn Trekking

Trekking is similar to hiking but is more intense, traverses longer routes, and often includes overnight stays. Trekking takes you deep into the trails, where you can escape from your hectic life, immerse yourself in nature, and see spectacular views.

Unlike mountain climbing, trekking doesn’t require much gear other than warm outerwear,  sturdy shoes, a backpack of supplies, and trekking poles. Camping supplies, such as a tent, battery-operated lights, and packaged food are also needed. For your first time, you might want to join a guide-led trekking tour.

The amazing variety of mountainous areas offers a wide range of outdoor recreation experiences. If you love adventure but don’t live near a mountain range, it’s worth your while to plan your next vacation exploring the heights.
