You’ve got some time off, and now you’re planning a vacation. Whether your destination is an exotic overseas vacation or a quick getaway to the shore, you want to have fun, experience new things, and make memories that last.
Plan Activities in Advance
Once you arrive at your destination, you don’t want to spend your precious time off searching for things to do, places to eat, and sites to see. Instead, do some research before you leave home. Consider who’s going on the trip, their interests and abilities, the time you have, and your budget.
Start by researching some general travel reviews about your destination. Select a few attractions and read in more detail. Determine if you will need tickets in advance or what other details you should know before going. Try to plan one or two major activities per day and have back-ups in case something falls through.
Document Your Trip
To make your trip unforgettable, plan to document it with photos and videos. Use your smartphone, or if you’re inclined, try a digital camera/recorder. Many of these have superior zoom lenses that let you get closer to the action or scenery. Once you’re back home, don’t leave your photos sitting there in digital form—get them printed out.
You can create a photo album or scrapbook and caption them so that years from now, you will have a tangible memory of your experience. When processing your photos, look around. Professional photo labs give you more options than consumer labs at major retailers. Many can also create movies from your videos and still photos.
Leave Time to Explore
While planning is vital, it’s equally important to leave unscheduled time in your itinerary, whether it’s used just to relax or to explore your surroundings. As much as you research, there will always be unexpected things to see and do.
With free time, you can also get to know the local people and culture by going into the shops and sampling the cuisine at local restaurants. Take time to enjoy nature, too, even if you’re visiting a big city. A few hours in a park can restore your spirit and give you energy for more travel.
An unforgettable trip begins by thinking ahead, being informed, and being open to new experiences. As you consider your next vacation, wherever it might take you, make a plan to enjoy and remember.
