Get Ready for Summer Travel

If summer travel feels more expensive and a little more stressful lately… you’re not imagining it.

Between rising airfare, packed airports, major events filling hotels, and fuel prices creeping up again, travelers are approaching vacations a little differently this year. And honestly? I don’t blame them.

As a travel expert and former flight attendant, I’m seeing a lot more people focus on simpler, easier vacations instead of trying to cram in one giant, exhausting trip.

The Rise of the “Simpler” Vacation

Not everyone wants the stress of a huge international itinerary right now.

A lot of travelers are saying, “You know what? I just want to relax.”

That’s why road trips, beach towns, lake getaways, and long weekends closer to home are becoming really popular again. People still want to travel — they just want less chaos getting there.

And honestly, some of the best vacations don’t require two layovers, customs lines, and losing an entire day to travel.

Should You Book Flights Now or Wait?

This is probably the number one question I’m getting right now.

My advice? If you see a fare you’re comfortable paying, book it.

The old strategy of waiting until the last minute for airfare deals doesn’t work the way it used to, especially during busy travel periods. Airlines are pricing based on demand, and if planes are filling up, those prices usually go up — not down.

The biggest money-saving trick is still flexibility. Flying midweek, adjusting airports, or even shifting your trip by a day or two can sometimes save hundreds.

When Driving Actually Makes More Sense

For families especially, road trips can still be the better deal.

Once you start adding up airfare for multiple people, checked bag fees, airport parking, rental cars, and everything else, driving often wins — especially for trips within about 5–7 hours.

I always tell travelers: don’t just compare the plane ticket. Compare the total trip cost.

Big Events Are Going to Mean Big Crowds

Between FIFA events and America’s 250th birthday celebrations, some destinations are going to be extremely busy.

Hotels will fill up faster. Airfare will spike. Airports will be crowded.

If you’re planning to travel around major events, book early and give yourself extra time for everything — especially at the airport.

One smart strategy is staying outside the main event areas and commuting in. It can save money and make the trip a lot less stressful.

Easy Ways Families Can Save Money This Summer

There are still ways to travel without blowing the budget.

A few of my favorite tips:

  • Travel midweek if possible
  • Look for hotels with free breakfast
  • Bring snacks and refillable water bottles
  • Don’t overschedule expensive activities
  • Consider national parks, beach trips, and simple road trips

Sometimes the easiest vacations end up being the most memorable.

Are Airfares Going to Keep Rising?

Fuel costs absolutely impact airline pricing, and airlines are very quick to raise fares when costs go up.

At the same time, we’re seeing fewer ultra-low-cost carriers in the market, which means less pressure to keep fares cheap.

The reality is this: travelers may need to adjust expectations a little. Ultra-cheap airfare is getting harder to find during peak travel periods.

My biggest advice this summer? Plan ahead, book earlier than you think you should, and stay flexible whenever possible.
