How to Start Your Career as a Travel Agent

Being a travel agent is not always glamorous. You are constantly at the beck and call of your clients, responsible for making their vacation flawless. If the idea of knowing everything there is to know about an area appeals to you, follow these steps to become a successful travel agent.

Learn the Basics

When trying to become a travel agent, it is important to familiarize yourself with the basics. This can be done through taking classes or certification courses. While it is not a strict requirement, most colleges and trade schools offer tourism certifications. Certificates can be very helpful, especially when you combine them with background training in marketing, hospitality, or event planning. Your knowledge of various destinations, sales, itinerary planning, and booking software will be crucial for your success as a travel agent.

Get Licensed

Before becoming a travel agent, you must get the proper licensing. If you are working as an independent agent, you need your own insurance. If your client’s trip goes wrong, you will be held liable and you don’t want to pay out of pocket for the mistake. Travel agents must register with the state or country where they are working. There are certain requirements to qualify for a license. A DUI can put your professional license in jeopardy. Getting the proper licenses will protect you, your business, and your clients, from any unfortunate circumstances.

Define your Niche

Hard as you try, it is impossible to be an expert in every area of the world. As an agent, you are constantly looking for deals, activities, and making reservations for your clients. Defining your niche as a travel agent will help you home in on specific areas that you can be an expert in and give your clients the best experience. Knowing every hotel, restaurant, and excursion in your destination of choice will bring you more clients and bigger commissions. When determining your niche, be aware that traveling to those locations and experiencing everything there for yourself is part of your job.

Starting a career as a travel agent will vastly open your knowledge and expertise of various parts of the world. If you want to be successful, it is important to take the necessary steps that will best prepare you. Learn the basics, get licensed, and define your niche to gather a sound clientele and have a successful career.
