Popular Resort Closes During Brain-Eating Amoeba Testing

A tourist hotspot in central Texas is undergoing tests conducted by health officials after a man who visited a resort died of a brain-eating amoeba.

According to The Associated Press, Waco-McLennan County Public Health District spokesman Kelly Craine said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tested the facilities at BSR Cable Park’s Surf Resort.

The results of the tests will be revealed later this week.

The owner of the BSR Surf Resort, Stuart E. Parsons Jr., voluntarily closed as the investigation into the death of a 29-year-old New Jersey man named Fabrizio Stabile. Stabile died September 21 from a deadly amoeba called Naegleria fowleri after visiting the park.

CDC officials said the infection caused by the amoeba typically occurs when people swim in warm freshwater places like lakes and rivers.

“Our hearts and prayers are with his family, friends and the New Jersey surf community during this difficult time,” Parsons told CBSNews.com.
