FROM THE SHOW

The Extended Roadtripper’s Guide to Trailers, Campers and RVs

The extended road trip has a special mystique for most individuals. Everyone has that dream to get away from the restrictions of normal life and escape to the freedom of the open road. An RV can facilitate this escape, allowing you to take all of the comforts of home along with you on the journey. You can drink coffee in a national park in the morning and cook dinner outside a tourist trap that night. You can explore a continent and have all sorts of fun doing so. The RV becomes an exploratory vehicle, providing you with all sorts of options.

How Long Should I Plan For?

The length of the trip is going to depend on how long you feel comfortable staying away from home. For most people, this means a season or two, or about two to six months. This is usually more than sufficient time to see all of the sights that you want and scratch any traveling itch. Make sure that you have enough clothing, food and entertainment options before you go and that you properly prepare for the trip before heading out. The amount of time you should take on this trip also depends on the nature of your work. If you’re someone who works remotely, you’re likely going to be able to stay out on the road for longer, as long as you have access to the internet while you’re out. If you don’t work remotely, you might not be able to take a lot of time off. Make sure you look at your work’s time off policy to see how long of a trip is going to be feasible for you if you want to keep your job.

What Kind of Vehicle?

When you start looking at the type of vehicle that you will need, consider how many people will be making the trip and how long you plan to be on the road. In general, if you are planning on just yourself and someone else for a few weeks, a small vehicle will work while more people and a longer trip will necessitate a larger vehicle. The idea is to be as prepared as possible, and the longer you will be on the road, the more room you will need for any necessary items. Also, with more people, there will need to be more breathing room for everyone.

Trailers and Campers

While there is a wide variety of trailers and campers, the options are going to come down to three basic options: a sleeper, a small camper or a larger trailer. A sleeping trailer only has enough room for a person to sleep and not do much else. This means that you will need a camp stove and other camping supplies if you are interested in preparing your own food. A small camper allows some prep space but can be crowded and will definitely feel any bumps. A larger trailer allows sleeping while in transit, but it is still advised that you stop during the night.

The Whole Range of RVs

An RV is the optimal mode of travel for long trips but can also be the most expensive vehicle to procure and properly prepare. Again, there are several options available, so choose the best possible vehicle type for your specific needs. Keep in mind that the more extras you choose, the more expensive the vehicle becomes. Therefore, before you even start looking at RVs, decide which options are important, which ones are optional and which ones you can live without so as to keep the price down as much as possible.

Other Options

There are other options, such as vans and other vehicles — even a bus can work. However, while those options are cheaper than a trailer or RV, they also come with fewer amenities, and it is harder to get a good night’s sleep due to cramped sleeping arrangements. While this allows you greater mobility and more money to play with, the limits may be an issue with an extended trip. Make sure that you do extensive research before your trip so that you can make sure to get the best kind of vehicle to suit your individual needs.

Do I Need a Special License?

A regular license will not do. You need a special license. A Class B would work for most types of vehicles. While it is easy to obtain, it is highly advised that you make sure that you take classes in how to properly drive larger vehicles and that you get used to driving the vehicle before you leave on the trip. The more people with the special license, the less each individual needs to drive each day, so make sure as many people as possible are properly licensed.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that you should enjoy yourself. Take advantage of the travel, and see what you can see. Some of the sights you will see are things that no one will ever see again. You are an explorer on your own road, so have fun and enjoy what you see and experience. It is likely that your experiences will be unique and well worth the time spent traveling.
