Celebrity doctor Drew Pinsky is currently under fire on social media after a tweet about vaccine passports. He tweeted that COVID vaccine passports would “segregate people and strip them of their freedom to travel internationally”.
He also added that how would people “feel if international travel also required other vaccinations”.
Twitter users pointed that other countries are requiring vaccinations long before the pandemic. These are vaccinations to diseases that are not common in the United States. For example, the CDC recommends Americans to have complete vaccines for chickenpox, diphtheria-tetanus-pertusis, flu, MMR, and polio if they are traveling to Japan.
This isn’t the first time that Drew Pinsky received criticisms from his opinion on Twitter. In March 2020, he said that the COVID19 pandemic caused a “press-induced panic”. He later apologized the following month. He said that “I wish had gotten it right, but I got it wrong”.
Vaccine passport is currently gaining attention. For instance, New York even came up with its version of a COVID19 passport that would show a person’s testing history and vaccination status. In addition to this, the airline industry is already pushing for a vaccine passport that can make boarding easier.
A vaccine passport could potentially make traveling simple. On top of that, it makes it easier to check a person’s vaccine and testing status.
New York’s COVID19 passport will also allow venues to open again as well. This will make it easier for a venue to check who completed the vaccination and who tested negative just by scanning the QR code.
Other countries are also leading the way towards developing their COVID19 passport. The European Union has been working closely with each other making a uniform COVID passport for the region.
However, there are some issues that should be addressed. Experts warn that many things can go wrong with a COVID19 passport. Among concerns include privacy. If you check New York’s vaccine passport, it made use of decentralized blockchain technology to protect the privacy of its users.
