Cabin Smoke Forces Delta to Evacuate Plane

A Delta Air Lines plane that had just landed in Denver was forced to evacuate its passengers after smoke was reported in the cabin Tuesday.

According to The Associated Press, Delta Flight 1854 had flown from Detroit Metropolitan Airport to Denver International Airport and landed safely in Colorado at around 8 p.m. local time.

The plane was taxiing to the gate as smoke filled the cabin. The aircraft was met by firefighters and emergency crews as the flight crew made the decision to evacuate the 153 passengers, including several people who were forced to stand on the wing.

CBS Denver reported that an airport spokesperson said one passenger was transferred to the UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital and others were injured during the evacuation, but none of those injuries were serious.

Passengers on the flight took to social media to share videos and images from inside the plane, saying they felt sick and asking Delta what caused the smoke inside the cabin. Flight operations at the Denver airport were not impacted.

Delta released an official statement in response to the incident:

After arrival in Denver and during taxi to the gate, Delta flight 1854 from Detroit to Denver stopped on a taxiway where customers deplaned via slides and over-wing exits due to an observance of smoke in the cabin. Airport response vehicles met the aircraft out of an abundance of caution and customers were transported to the terminal via buses. The safety of Delta’s customers and crew is our top priority and we apologize for the concern this situation has caused.
