Everyone has their favorite travel story. There is never any shortage of stories, whether diverted to somewhere unexpected or stranded in an airport for days. But there is one story that stands above the rest of them so far this year. As if flight attendants don’t have enough to do, one Frontier Airlines flight attendant pulled double duty as a midwife.
A Frontier Airlines flight attendant gave unexpected assistance to a passenger by helping deliver her baby girl in mid-air.
On January 16, flight attendant Diana Giraldo helped the mother to the plane’s back lavatory. During a flight from Denver to Orlando, she assisted her in giving birth, Frontier Airlines said.
“The baby couldn’t wait, so the early and unexpected labor took place,” Captain Chris Nye said in a post. While the delivery took place, the flight was “deviated to Pensacola to get mom and baby to a medical facility,” the airline told USA TODAY.
“The whole crew really did a great job,” Nye said. “I transferred controls and flying duties to my First Officer as I coordinated the diversion. Dispatch did a great job as well by suggesting Pensacola Airport and getting a gate and paramedics ready for us. This was a job well done, and I was happy to see everyone working together to successfully deliver a newborn on an aircraft!” Giraldo was “exemplary” and “calm,” Nye said, and “went above and beyond after the completion of the flight to coordinate our return to Orlando.”
While Frontier Airlines kept the mother’s name private, the baby girl’s name is more than appropriate. The mother bestowed upon the girl the middle name, “Sky.” Whatever Giraldo’s path is in her career, she definitely deserves a raise.
