Hawaiian Airlines Cuts Free Meals on all Domestic Transpacific Flights Starting July 1

Hawaiian Airlines will eliminate free meals on all domestic transpacific flights for economy passengers starting July 1.

On May 28, the airline announced an overhaul of its onboard service program. The change aims to provide greater choice and “improved quality and a deeper connection to the flavors of Hawaii.” This will apply to all domestic transpacific flights. However, the long-haul flight between Honolulu and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York will still offer complimentary meals.

No More Free Meals

Instead of receiving a free meal, which is usually a Hot Pocket-style sandwich, passengers can now purchase preordered dishes available up to 20 hours before departure.

According to Hawaiian, “aligning meal production with actual guest demand” can reduce food waste and packaging.

Alisa Onishi, managing director of Hawaii marketing for Hawaiian Airlines, said, “We designed our new Main Cabin meal program based on guest preference for more control and choice, while allowing us to deliver food that better reflects the richness of Hawaii’s culinary traditions.”

Onishi added, “By moving to a preorder model, we’re expanding beyond a single standard meal to offer a broader menu that reflects how our guests want to dine today.”

Flavors of Hawaii

Hawaiian partnered with Maui-based chef and James Beard Award finalist Sheldon Simeon to create the meals. Simeon said, “For me, food is about sharing where you’re from and the people who shaped you.” He added that the menu is inspired by the flavors he grew up with.

Passengers can choose from dishes such as barbecue teriyaki chicken bento, edamame quinoa with toasted almonds, and fried mochiko chicken with garlic noodles. For breakfast, Hawaiian offers French toast made with Hawaiian bread, eggs, and Portuguese sausage; an omelet served with roasted potatoes and chicken sausage; and coconut milk overnight oats with chia seeds and berries.

If economy passengers choose not to order a meal, they will still receive a complimentary drink and a sweet treat, such as chocolate or a cookie.
