“As Hawaii’s airline, we take great pride in sharing our love of these Islands, and as we welcome our newest guests from the East Coast, we are confident they will find that their vacation begins and ends with us,’’ Hawaiian Airlines President and CEO Peter Ingram said in a statement.
“We also want to help Hawai‘i residents get to where they want to go, and we know that people here travel to New England frequently.’’
As one might suspect, the event was greeted with great fanfare.
The Boston-Honolulu route is now the longest interstate flight in the U.S., clocking in at 5,095 miles. According to the airline, It will take nearly 10 hours traveling to Boston from Honolulu and roughly 11.5 hours traveling to Honolulu from Boston. With the time difference, the flight will leave Boston in the morning and still arrive in Hawaii late afternoon that same day.
Officials stressed not only the obvious of getting away from New England winters with the choice of five flights per week but also the business impact. In fact, that first flight from Boston to Honolulu carried more than a ton of live New England lobsters.
“On behalf of the Commonwealth, we are pleased to welcome Hawaiian Airlines to Massachusetts,’’ Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker said in a release. “This new service will provide access to new markets for businesses and connect two exciting destinations for travelers in both states.’’
