Interjet Drops Four US Routes and Adds New Routes to South America

Interjet is phasing out some of its Mexico-United States routes as well as a handful of routes within Mexico.

At the same time, the airline will open new routes between Mexico and South America as part of a broader restructuring effort, Mexico News Daily reported.

The new route changes will take effect May 11 starting with discontinuation of the airline‘s Mexico City – Aguascalientes flights.

Additional routes on the chopping block include Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City to Ciudad Obregon, both of which will cease on June 5. Interjet’s Cancun to New York flights meanwhile will stop running on June 17.

While it scales back in some places, the airline is growing in others. Newly added routes include Mexico City to Medellin, Colombia (starting June 5) and Cancun to Medellin, which will start June 6.

Also coming online are flights between Cancun and Lima, Peru as well as a new route from Mexico City to Guayaquil, Ecuador, which will start operating June 17 and June 21 respectively.

Interjet also intends to expand the number of seats available domestically on eight routes starting June 1, according to Mexico News Day. The routes benefitting from this addition all originate in Mexico City and travel the following locations: to El Bajío, Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, Mazatlán, Palenque, Puerto Escondido, Torreón and Varadero.

All of these plans follow Interjet signing a bilateral alliance agreement with American Airlines, which will allow the two operators to jointly offer all of their routes as partners.

Both airlines have been experiencing booming sales in recent years, said Mexico News Daily.

During the first quarter of this year Interjet’s sales alone were up 52 percent over last year.

Interjet called the new American Airlines pact mutually beneficial, noting that it allows both carriers to benefit from increased travel between Mexico and the United States.
