Singapore to Expand its Airport Even More

Singapore will add a fifth terminal at Changi Airport to address growing travel demand.

The island-city hopes to have the terminal up and running by 2030, according to a report from Bloomberg.

This is just the latest expansion at the airport, which is Asia’s second busiest. Singapore has been on something of a spending spree with the goal of expanding its overall transport infrastructure in order to keep up with a growing class of travelers in the Asia Pacific region as the ranks of middle-income earners expand.

Changi Airport handled a record 65.6 million passengers last year, which was 5.5 percent more than in 2017.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said passenger traffic in the Asian Pacific region will more than double over the next 20 years.

As part of the effort to meet increasing demand from travelers, a shopping and retail attraction known as Jewel Changi Airport, is slated to open in mid-April attached to the airport. The facility will include such offerings as early check-ins, a variety of dining options and retail shopping. The new space will also include the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, walking trails, canopy mazes, and slides.

Changi Airport is also remodeling its terminals in order to accommodate larger numbers of travelers and will increase automation for its baggage system.

Singapore’s airport isn’t the only focus of attention, however.

The island-city is expected to begin operating a new port in 2021. Singapore is also laying the groundwork to be able to provide liquified natural gas to vessels at its port by 2020, according to Bloomberg.
