Alaska Railroad Kicks Off 2018-19 Winter Season

WHY IT RATES: Passengers can easily journey from one part of Alaska to another with Alaska Railroad’s increased winter service.—Jessica Zickefoose, TravelPulse Associate Editor

The Alaska Railroad launched its 2018-19 winter season by expanding the number of departure dates for the Aurora Winter Train. This will be the fifth season the Alaska Railroad has increased its winter service to meet continued seasonal demand.

Passengers can ride the Aurora Winter Train now through mid-May. The train travels north on Saturdays from Anchorage to Fairbanks and returns south on Sundays.

The striking winter landscapes along this route are breathtaking with snow-covered mountains and often give riders a clear glimpse of the tallest peak in North America – Denali. The expansion of winter service also includes select dates in December and January around the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

To coincide with spring break travel, the Railroad is also increasing the number of departures in February, in addition to offering service to six days a week throughout the month of March—another first for the Alaska Railroad this season.

“We are so thrilled to offer even more options for winter travel around Alaska,” says Dale Wade, vice president of marketing and customer service for the Alaska Railroad.

“Our Aurora Winter Train brings passengers picturesque views of the Alaska backcountry, lets them venture into the heart of the state in Fairbanks, or stay in the shadow of Denali with a visit to Talkeetna. We look forward to visitors and locals alike making memories with us during their travels this winter.”
