In a statement, Carnival Cruise Line said:
“While docking this morning in New York, Carnival Horizon made contact with the west end of pier 90. There were no injuries to report and impact to the bow of the ship was minor. Assessments of the pier are currently underway. The U.S. Coast Guard and other authorities have been notified. There has been no impact to our debarkation process this morning and embarkation for today’s sailing is expected to proceed as normal.”
According to published accounts, the Coast Guard has been at the scene, investigating pier dama ge.
Website CruiseRadio quoted a “retired ship captain,” who indicated that currents in the New York harbor can have a big impact on navigation. Despite high-tech bow thrusters, ships often need tugboat assists to dock and undock.
It’s not clear if river currents were a factor in today’s incident.
Carnival Horizon is the newest ship in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet. She debuted in April in Barcelona. The ship repositioned to New York City in May for a summer schedule of four-day Bermuda and eight-day Caribbean departures. In September, she repositions to Miami for year-round six- and eight-day Caribbean cruises.
