Royal Caribbean Temporarily Closes Sky Pad Ride on Two Ships Amid Safety Inspection

Royal Caribbean International confirmed it has temporarily taken the Sky Pad trampoline bungee ride out of service on a pair of its ships after a man fell and fractured his pelvis in February.

Twenty-five-year-old Casey Holladay was sailing with his girlfriend from Miami aboard the Mariner of the Seas when the bungees snapped and he fell about 20 feet onto the deck floor. He has since filed a $10 million lawsuit against the cruise line.

The Sky Pad ride is also featured on Independence of the Seas, which sails similar three- to five-night Caribbean cruises out of South Florida.

In an email to the Miami Herald, Royal Caribbean International’s corporate communications director Owen Torres said: “As part of our commitment to safety, we are temporarily taking Sky Pad out of service on Mariner of the Seas and Independence of the Seas to conduct further inspection.”

Mariner of the Seas debuted the Sky Pad ride last summer following some $120 million in renovations that included new attractions, restaurants, staterooms and entertainment.

The news comes one week after Royal Caribbean was forced to cancel three sailings aboard Oasis of the Seas after a crane fell into the side of the ship while it was in drydock.
