The Fincantieri shipbuilding group announced Monday it had signed the contracts for the construction of two ships for Viking Ocean Cruises.
Officials from Fincantieri said the new vessels would be delivered respectively in 2024 and 2025, with the agreement between Viking and the shipbuilder having an option to build up to four more ships through 2027.
Fincantieri also announced the new vessels would feature the industry’s latest available technologies, but officials did not expand on details or what would set the ships apart when launched.
“We can confirm the content of Fincantieri’s press release and that Viking has signed a contract for two additional ocean ships, which will be sister ships to the existing fleet,” a Viking Ocean Cruises spokesperson told CruiseCritic.com. “We have not announced any further details beyond those that are included in Fincantieri’s press release.”
When Viking Ocean Cruises entered the ocean cruise market, the company started its partnership with Fincantieri in 2012. The two brands have worked together or have agreed upon the construction of 20 total ships, the largest number of units built by a shipbuilder for one sole shipowner.
