An Inside Look at NU Hotel’s Frida Kahlo Mural Room

Frida Kahlo is “Caliente!”

The Mexican artist’s unibrow can be seen on coffee mugs, t-shirts and tote bags nationwide.

The Museum of Fine Arts Boston currently has on view its first-ever exhibit featuring Kahlo’s art.

Advance tickets to an exhibition of her work at the equally prestigious Brooklyn Museum are sold out, just like they were for the same show, Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving, at airlines/jetblue-unveils-first-european-route-to-london.html” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow noopener noreferrer”>London’s Victoria & Albert Museum.

MORE Hotel & Resort

Now, Downtown Brooklyn’s original boutique hotel, NU Hotel, allows for fans of Kahlo to take their passion to a new level with a stay in its new, one-of-a-kind, Frida Kahlo mural room created by Mexican-born and Brooklyn-based artist, Miguel Ayuso.

What’s more, NU’s exclusive partnership with the Brooklyn Museum has provided one of the last ways for visitors to attend the sold-out exhibit, which ends May 12. Guests booking the VIP “Viva Frida Package” will be treated to the ultimate Frida Kahlo experience in Brooklyn.

In addition to accommodations in the Kahlo mural room, a pair of flexible, untimed tickets to the exhibit are included. Guests will also receive two Frida-inspired BocanegraRita’s (more on that later) at NU Bar & Lounge, a copy of the exhibit book Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up and a $75 gift certificate to experience the Frida Khalo menu at The Norm, Brooklyn Museum’s onsite restaurant—the Enchiladas De Pollo Oaxaqueño sounds delicious!

Appearances Can Be Deceiving represents the largest exhibit of Kahlo’s work in the U.S. in a decade. In addition to significant paintings, including iconic self-portraits, Kahlo’s clothing, drawings, photographs and personal artifacts are displayed. This marks the first time these personal possessions have been accessible to the American public since they were rediscovered in 2004 after being locked away since Kahlo’s death in 1954.

While the Brooklyn Museum is only two miles from NU Hotel, guests needn’t even go that far to enjoy great art as the property will be hosting Fridge Art Fair from April 30 through May 5. For the third consecutive year, NU Hotel will host an exclusive showing in conjunction with the fair, appropriately, featuring works inspired by Kahlo, with local artists showing their interpretation of her work and cultural impact.

In addition, now through June 9, WINGS TO FLY is an art demonstration curated by Welancora Gallery in conjunction with NU Hotel’s sponsorship of the Kahlo exhibit. WINGS TO FLY features paintings, prints and drawings by local artists Audrey Frank Anastasi, Siona Benjamin, Esteban Chavez and Michela Martello on view in the hotel lobby and the adjoining PBX Gallery.

Back to the BocanegraRita which will surely hit the spot following all that art.

This is another partnership between NU Hotel and the Brooklyn Museum centered on Kahlo. Bocanegra is a limited distribution Mexican beer which just broke into the U.S. market and is also helping sponsor the exhibit.

To make a BocanegraRita, rim a cocktail glass with lime and chili salt. In a cocktail shaker, combine the juice of one blood orange, 1/2 lime, two ounces of Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver tequila and one-half ounce of Bols Triple Sec Liqueur. Strain. Top it off with Bocanegra Dunkel Weizen, garnish with blood orange slice.

Springtime in Brooklyn never tasted so good.
