How to Reduce Your Impact on a Hiking Trip

Hiking is a beautiful, simple, healthy, and wholesome pastime. Unfortunately, it quickly loses its wholesomeness if hikers disrespect the natural environments they are so fond of traversing. Here are the best ways to reduce your impact on a hiking trip.

Leave No Trace

This is a good motto for anybody who decides to do anything in nature. Frequent campers and hunters often emphasize the importance of leaving no trace because of the impact it has on others.

When it’s time for you to move on from a particular trail, campsite, or any other area, think about what you’ve left behind. Make sure you’re not leaving it worse than when you came. Do a careful sweep to ensure you’ve picked up all trash in the zone. If you had a fire, make sure that it’s dowsed thoroughly to avoid injuries or forest fires.

Treat Wildlife With Respect

When you hike, you are moving through the home of the native flora and fauna. You must treat all local wildlife with care and respect. This can mean many things. Don’t bother animals who might be vulnerable or dangerous just because you want a photo. Research beforehand to know what kinds of animals are in the area so you know what to expect.

Snakes can quickly end your trip if you bother them. Do not feed animals whatsoever; this will teach them to expect food from humans, which can have multiple negative consequences. The food will also likely be very bad for them. The best way to interact with wildlife is to respect their space and their habitat by not getting too close.

Keep to the Trails

Preestablished hiking trails are always the best option for a multitude of reasons. The most basic reason is safety. Going off the trails means putting yourself at risk to local wildlife who are not expecting you to come walking through their home. It also means that you could get lost or hurt unexpectedly, and then have trouble finding your way back. Only the most experienced hikers who know the area they are in well should even attempt to find new paths. Always make sure to read up on the rules, regulations, or guidelines of a given hike before deciding to go.

Hiking should be a universally positive experience for everyone, no matter which level of experience you happen to be at. The only way to cultivate that is to practice the habit of leaving a trail better than when you found it. If you are respectful and attentive you should have nothing to worry about.
