3 Hacks for Traveling in a Big City

Big cities are a great place to visit a museum, see a show or just people-watch. As a tourist, you can organize your day by what you want to see and where you want to be at all points of the day. It’s a good idea to create a rough schedule built around any appointments or times you need to hit.

Plan Your Activities by Area

Sit down with a map and figure out the distance between the places you want to visit. For example, if you want to go to New York City and visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you can also stroll across Central Park and visit the American Museum of Natural History. Many cities offer walking tours for visitors that will help you stretch your legs and enjoy the city at your own pace.

Take Public Transportation

Big city driving is an art and a skill that takes time to develop. Cities like Houston and Atlanta have a lot to offer visitors, but driving in those towns can be extremely stressful. Instead, download the public transportation apps for the city you plan to visit, invest in a metro card, or make sure you have plenty of change. Let the professionals provide the transport. It’s 60 times safer to travel by bus than it is to travel by car. In addition, while the bus gets you to your destination, you can enjoy the sights.

Pack Light

We all want to look our best when traveling, but do what you can to keep your luggage manageable. Carry your critical stuff like ID, passport, credit card and cash in a small neck purse and tuck it under your shirt for security. Invest in an RFID wallet. Be ready to layer up to stay warm and make sure you have a raincoat that will cover your bulkiest cold-weather gear instead of packing a big heavy coat. Roll all the garments you can. Invest in a suitcase with durable wheels that can handle cobblestones as well as sidewalks if you’re headed overseas.

With a little planning, a metro card, and a small suitcase, you can enjoy many big cities all over the world. Stay alert and always keep your neck purse close to your skin. Keep your hand on your suitcase handle at all times. By being a self-contained traveler with your wits about you will help you make the most of your travels.
