America’s extensive coastlines are renowned for beautiful beaches and natural areas perfect for swimming, boating, and water sports. But if you can’t make a trip to the coast, you can still enjoy your favorite water activities at one of hundreds of large, freshwater lakes. One of them is probably only a short drive from you.
Lake Tahoe
Located on the border between California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is a popular tourist destination no matter what the season. In summer, you can swim at one of dozens of sandy beaches nestled among mountain views. Many beaches also have boat launches and areas for kayaking and paddle boating, as well as fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. In the winter, there are snow sports like skiing, ice skating, and snowmobiling.
The area around Lake Tahoe has plenty of restaurants, nightspots, and shopping. There are also golf courses and other recreation. Concerts and other special events are held throughout the year.
Lake of the Ozarks
Lake of the Ozarks has more than 1,000 miles of shoreline, thanks to its long, narrow, winding shape. Along these shores you’ll find a variety of boating and water sports. It’s one of the top fishing destinations in the Midwest. You can rent a boat or hire a fishing guide.
There are also plenty of opportunities for hiking and backpacking around the lake. The trails take you through forests where you may spot wildflowers, birds, and wildlife like river otters. There are also several caves where you can view stalagmites, stalactites, and other amazing formations.
Land Between the Lakes
If you visit the Land Between the Lakes area, you will have two lakes to explore, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. Both offer fishing, boating, hiking, swimming, and picnicking. There’s also horseback riding at some locations. Seasonal hunting is available in some areas of Land Between the Lakes.
For fans of canoeing and kayaking, there are miles of water trails on both lakes that bring you close to the shoreline where you can view wildlife and birds such as bald eagles, pelicans, herons, and cormorants. Accommodations range from campgrounds to luxury resorts.
If you love spending time on the water and exploring nature, you don’t have to go to the coast. Wherever you live, there’s likely a large lake nearby that’s perfect for a long weekend getaway or an extended vacation.
