How to Immerse Yourself in the Local Culture of a City

Whether on vacation or a business trip, it’s always exciting to visit a new city. While it’s usually fun to see the famous landmarks and tourist spots, you may be missing out on the true heart and soul of the city. To genuinely get to know the city and people, try to immerse yourself in the local culture by doing the following things!

Ride Public Transportation

Hop on a bus or light rail car, and you’ll get a low-cost tour of the city. Public transportation takes you beyond the tourist traps and into the neighborhood hubs where people live, work, and shop. You’ll also be surrounded by residents who are knowledgeable about the city’s history and hot spots for dining and nightlife. Guard your belongings carefully, however; in most large tourist-oriented cities, there are pickpockets. Even in smaller cities, using public transportation can be helpful. Strike up a friendly conversation with those around you, and he or she might give insider information about where to go and what to do.

Eat Local

Nothing defines a local culture better than its cuisine. While you’ll easily find the chain restaurants, you’ll truly experience the specialty dishes of a city if you seek out the local restaurants, diners, bars, and grills. Even casual cuisine often takes on a local flair. For example, pizza can be vastly different in crust style, spices, topping preferences, and even the size and shape of the pieces depending on where you are. By sampling a local pizza joint rather than a chain, you can experience pizza the way the locals like it. And, local pizza is often healthier than chain restaurants because it’s hand-made from fresh ingredients and promptly cooked in a hot oven

Shop at Independent Stores

Sure, you can find the big-box and chain retail stores in any city, but only the independently-owned shops can tell you something about the authentic culture. Many small stores carry arts and crafts created by hometown artisans as well as clothing and local food items. Others specialize in items expressing the area’s history or unique culture. You can often find unexpected bargains on high-quality, one-of-a-kind merchandise that you wouldn’t at a tourist shop.

The rewards of immersing yourself in the local culture of a city are immeasurable. Why limit yourself to the sights you can see in a short walk from your hotel? Truly travel and witness the real culture beyond a city’s tourist traps.
