How to Prepare Yourself for Camping in the Wilderness

Camping in the wilderness can be a bit more involved than just setting up at a campsite you rented. If you’re planning a trip out into the wilderness where you’ll be on your own and far from civilization, you need to make sure you’re prepared. Here are some things you should do before you go.

Do a Dry Run

They say practice makes perfect, so do a practice run of your camping trip if you can. Practice setting up your tent so you know it’s in good condition and you’re familiar with how to do it before you get out there. If you’re planning to cook meals, practice cooking the recipes you intend to use on the equipment you plan to bring with you. Practice starting a fire using different fire starting methods so you know what will work best and what supplies you’ll need to have. This can help you feel more confident and prepared when it’s time to use these skills.

Pack Emergency Supplies

There’s a reason “Be Prepared” is the Boy Scout motto. Being prepared for emergencies helps protect your health and safety in the event that you encounter one. Make sure that you pack emergency supplies like extra food, plenty of water, and first aid supplies. Make sure your emergency supplies are good quality and reliable. Pack an extra flashlight that uses LED light. LED lights have benefits over conventional lights. They tend to be brighter, smaller, and lighter. They also tend to last longer, which is great if you find yourself needing light for a while.

Brush Up on Your Navigation Skills

If you’re going to be away from civilization or intend to do any hiking, make sure you brush up on your navigation skills before you go. Familiarize yourself with where you’ll be going beforehand, and make sure you pay close attention to your surroundings. Practice using a map and compass as well as GPS equipment. These tools can help you avoid getting lost. As an added precaution and level of preparation, make sure you know what to do if you do end up getting lost.

Good preparation is essential to having a great experience with camping in the wilderness. Practicing the skills you’ll likely need to use and packing emergency supplies are a couple of things you can do to get yourself ready to go. This will help you have a safe, fun camping trip.
