How to Save Money When Traveling Domestically

Traveling domestically still offers many of the charms of international travel, but can be kinder to your budget. Everything from airfare to currency exchange saves you money on a domestic trip But some domestic trips can still get wildly expensive if you are not careful. If you know what you are doing, you can save loads of money on a domestic trip without sacrificing the quality of your travel. Here are a few tips to save money when traveling domestically. 

Pack Light

Baggage fees on airlines these days can be ridiculous. Paying 30-50 dollars or more for a bag each way on a trip can cost you one hundred dollars or more depending on how much you pack and how many travelers you have. Some airlines rewards programs or credit cards offer free checked bags, but if you are looking to save your money you should pack light. Spend as little as you can on baggage fees to save room in your budget for the experiences that really make travel worth it. You only need a small carry on to make it through most domestic trips, so don’t over do it on the packing. 

Weigh the Cost of Flying v. Driving

In some cases, renting a car can actually be cheaper than flying. If you are travelling domestically, and are struggling to find airfare that makes your trip worthwhile, then you should seriously look at the cost of driving. If you don’t own a car then you may be thinking that you can’t drive, but renting a car is often still a cheaper option than flying. Look into the day costs of renting, how long it will add to your trip to drive, and any other driving costs and you will see that you can often drive to your travel destination and back for several hundred dollars cheaper than flying. 

Stay With Friends

If you have friends or family that live in the city or area that you are visiting, then try to stay with them instead of staying in a hotel. Visiting friends is always a fun time and doing so on vacation is even better. Spending time with people who live far away from you can be wonderful. And catching up with family is also great. Staying with friends and family can save you over a hundred dollars per night or more when traveling, so seriously, consider it. 

Travel is amazing. And even domestic travel can open your eyes to new experiences. But domestic travel can also be expensive. But by following these three tips, you can save money on your domestic travel plans.
