How to Stay Safe When Enjoying the Outdoors

You never outgrow the pleasures of playing outside, no matter what the reason. Nothing can beat the chance to be in the sunshine, fresh air, and natural surroundings for outdoor sports, relaxing at the beach, or hiking through the woods. But, being outdoors also poses unique hazards, so you need to be prepared.

Be Aware of the Dangers

Whenever you’re outside, you should be aware of the potential dangers in your surroundings. Even in your own backyard, you should protect yourself against sunburn and insect bites. Mosquitoes carry several infectious diseases. In wilderness areas, there may be dangers from wildlife, such as poisonous snakes or bears.

Falling is one of the most common accidents outdoors. Uneven terrain, hidden depressions, and unseen tree limbs can cause you to trip and fall, leading to sprained ankles and broken legs. Be extra cautious anytime you’re on or near the water.

Bring the Right Equipment

You can protect yourself from common dangers if you bring the right equipment. No matter if you’re hiking, boating, or just enjoying a picnic in the park, you should get a first-aid kit. Make sure you have fresh water, especially in hot, humid temperatures. If you’re in cold weather, you should wear proper layers to stay warm.

When hiking, wear long pants, long sleeves, and a hat to protect from ticks and scrapes and scratches. In a boat, you should have enough floatation devices for each person on board. A fire extinguisher and a signaling device are also recommended.

Watch the Weather

Severe weather can be life-threatening. Even if you have checked the weather forecast, conditions can suddenly change for the worse. Lightning is a leading cause of injury and death. If you hear thunder, you should find shelter immediately. A fully-enclosed structure, even a car, is the safest shelter.

Be watchful for flash flood warnings. These can happen during any heavy rain that’s nearby. Stay away from streams or low areas if rain is predicted in your area. Never try to walk or drive through flooded areas. Find high ground and remain there until waters recede.

Whatever outdoor activities you pursue, it’s important to prepare by learning about your surroundings and preparing for emergencies. While some safety tips always apply, every outdoor location is different, so do your research before venturing out. Once you’re ready, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy yourself.
