What You Need to Make Sure to Budget into Your Trip

Once you’ve chosen your destination and booked your flight, the next step in preparing for your trip is to plan your budget. It’s a good idea to begin with the major necessities since they will comprise the majority of your expenses. Planning ahead can save you money, too.

Lodging Costs

The cost of lodging can vary greatly, depending on your location and your needs. Generally, hotels in the center of a major city are the most luxurious but also the most expensive. You can save money by staying in the outskirts or near the airport. When figuring your budget, don’t forget to add taxes and fees to the advertised cost per night.

Renting a vacation home is a great alternative to hotels and a terrific choice for families. Several websites offer a wide range of accommodations. You can rent a single bedroom in a private home, an apartment, an entire house, and everything in between.

Transportation Costs

In major cities, you may be able to walk to many destinations, and you’ll find taxis and rideshares readily available. If you’re adventurous, try taking public transit; it’s less expensive and you’ll get an up-close view of how the locals live.

If you plan to travel more than a few miles, renting a car is the best choice. Car rental prices depend on a number of factors like location and length of time. They also vary by type of vehicle. Compact cars and economy models will be the least expensive. As with hotels, there will be taxes and fees to account for in your budget.

Meal Costs

On a business trip, your company may reimburse you with a per diem, or a predetermined amount for meals each day. It’s a good model to follow when planning your own travel budget. Set a specified dollar amount per day for meals, and stick to it.

Many hotels will have mini-fridges and microwaves, which are handy for preparing breakfasts and quick lunches. Also, look for small diners rather than fine dining restaurants. You’ll spend less money, and you can become acquainted with the local culture.

Estimating the costs of your trip can give you an idea of your total expenses and help you control them. Traveling can be expensive, but with a carefully-planned budget, you’ll find you can go more places and do more things than you originally thought.
