What to Do When You Frequently Vacation on a Lake

Do you love vacationing by a lake? There’s just something about the sound of the water gently lapping against the shore and the opportunity to engage in some invigorating water sports that makes lakeside vacations so appealing.

If you’re a frequent lakeside vacationer, there are a few things you can do to make your trips even better.

Buy a Lake House

Sure, you could rent a lake house for your vacation. Depending on how frequently you take vacations and go to the same spot, it may make more sense to buy a lake house instead.

This offers the luxury of getting away whenever you want without making arrangements and paying to stay on someone else’s lakeside property. It doesn’t get more convenient than that. Just make sure you have a plan in place for how to maintain your lake house when you aren’t there. Not sure what to do with the property when you aren’t there? Consider renting it out to other vacationers.

Get a Boat

As with a lakeside vacation property, you could rent a boat to enjoy the lake with. It may make more sense to buy your own though. Owning a boat gives you the freedom to take the boat out whenever you want and use it however you like.

Becoming a boat owner can be a big responsibility, so learn how to protect yourself, your passengers, and your boat. Boat insurance is a good place to start. Most states don’t require insurance for your boat, although it can still be a good idea. Learn how to safely operate a boat, file a float plan, and handle common boating emergencies as well.

Keep Your Vacation Essentials Packed

While every vacation can be unique, there are some vacation essentials that you’ll need for virtually every lakeside trip. It’s easier to pack up and leave if you have certain essentials already packed and ready to go. Sunscreen, swimsuits, floatation devices, bug repellent, towels, a basic first aid kit, and basic toiletries can all be packed in a duffel bag or luggage to make getting out the door faster and easier.

If you are a frequent lakeside visitor during your vacations, it may more make sense to take a different approach to your vacations than it would if you rarely visited. Consider how frequently you travel to a lake, how much you spend on different aspects of your vacation, and if keeping a go bag for your lakeside adventures would make things easier. That consideration can help you make the choices you need to make your frequent lake vacations more relaxing and enjoyable.
