Toll Roads

Different states or regions of the country may feel completely foreign to your home, from the sights and landscape to the culture, to the driving rules and features that will get you there. Toll roads are one such “feature” that you should keep in mind as you plan your trip. Some regions of the country may use these roads—roads where a payment is required for access—as forms of income to boost funding for roadway maintenance and creation. Before you get caught paying for a road you were unaware would cost you, make sure you look into the potential for toll roads and know exactly how much you’ll need to pay (and how!)

Be Aware of Different Traffic Signs

Different areas may also utilize various traffic signs that you are unfamiliar with. For example, flashing yellow lights mean you need to yield to oncoming traffic. That may be a tool that your home doesn’t use, so seeing a flashing yellow light could be confusing and cause stress and unsafe reactions on the road. Just as you needed to learn during your first driving experience ever, you need to be able to recognize or interpret signage for the safety of others, as well as your own confidence, on the road. Consider doing some brief research into road laws of your destination, or prepare to look up unfamiliar signs and features as they come up.

Look Through the Route

Roadways themselves may be constructed differently in different regions! Before you get turned around on weird roadways, or miss a key exit, or find yourself anxious about the paving (or lack thereof) on a route, look through the planned directions to your destination so that you feel more or less familiar with what to expect along the way! Having a preconceived idea of foreign roads can grant you valuable peace of mind for what could otherwise be a stressful situation of uncertainty.

Give yourself the best setup for the best trip possible, by familiarizing yourself with the potential differences in driving means and laws and safety. Your trip will be safer and more comfortable when you stay on top of the journey.
