Crew Member Falls Overboard, Gets Rescued by Another Cruise Ship

A cruise ship worker who went overboard Saturday spent nearly 24 hours lost at sea before being rescued by another cruise ship.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that the missing Norwegian Getaway crew member was rescued by the Carnival Glory approximately 21 miles north of Cuba Sunday afternoon.

According to the Associated Press, the 33-year-old was spotted by a Carnival Glory cabin steward while the ship was en route to Cozumel, Mexico.

The man was reported to be in stable condition despite not having a safety device and likely treading water for roughly 22 hours.

“This is nothing short of miraculous,” Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “Kudos to the Carnival Glory team for this amazing effort to rescue a fellow seafarer.”

“We are so happy to know that the individual is safe and will soon be reunited with friends and family,” said Norwegian Cruise Line in a statement.

The Coast Guard launched a massive search and rescue effort over the weekend that included boats and airplanes, covering more than 1,630 square miles. The incident is currently under investigation, the Coast Guard confirmed.

The Getaway returned to Miami at the conclusion of an eight-day voyage on Sunday while the Glory continued on to Cozumel amid a seven-day Western Caribbean cruise.
