Gunman Opens Fire in Popular Tourist Area of Toronto

A gunman opened fire in the popular downtown area of Toronto Sunday night, leaving fourteen people injured and one person dead. The shooter also died during the attack.

According to Reuters.com, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said one of the surviving victims was a young girl who was transported to a local hospital where she was in a critical condition.

Police, paramedics and firefighters arrived in Toronto’s Greektown neighborhood, which is a popular tourist area filled with restaurants, cafes and shops. Authorities confirmed the shooter used a handgun in the attacks.

“We are looking at all possible motives… and not closing any doors,” Saunders told the media.

Reports of gunfire began at 10 p.m. local time, with witnesses in the area claiming they hear around 25 gunshots. Sunday’s attack is just the latest in a string of deadly shootings in the city this year.

So far in 2018, 26 people were shot and killed, a 53-percent increase when compared to the same period last year. Toronto recently deployed about 200 police officers following a series of recent shootings.
