How to Plan an Extended Summer Vacation

Extended summer vacations can be so wonderful, it almost makes it hard to come back. An extended summer vacation sounds extravagant and expensive. You may not think that you can afford one. But it is actually not that hard to have a long vacation on a budget as long as you properly plan for it.

Live Like a Local

You will save money by living like a local instead of just going to the high-priced tourist spots. Cook at your rental home some nights instead of eating out constantly. Instead of renting a car, use the transportation that locals use. This might mean that you walk more, but walking is good exercise. You’ll also get a better feel for the culture and daily life in that region if you choose to immerse yourself more fully. Try not to stand out as a tourist. Some places will charge you more for food and other services if they think that you are a foreigner or from out of town.

Choose a Place to Stay

Hotels and resorts can be really nice. Many offer comprehensive packages. This allows you to not have to worry about cleaning your room, preparing meals, or planning excursions. Everything is done for you, but this service comes at a steep price tag. If you don’t want to spend too much, you could also consider renting from a local rental company.

You can avoid travel scams by working with a known home rental company. If you are having difficulty determining a trustworthy company, try to avoid listings with poor grammar and typos. Avoid listings that don’t require you to go through a screening process. Never wire or mail your rent money. Always insist on seeing the location before renting. By following these precautions, you will be much harder for a scammer to fool.

Budget Wisely

It’s important that you set a strict budget for your trip. Include a budget for housing, food, travel, entertainment, souvenirs, and emergencies. It’s usually a good idea to plan out ahead of time what, and where you plan to eat. This will help you know how much food money you will need. You should also try to plan out what souvenirs you want. This will allow you to shop with purpose and find the best deals.

As you put your plan together, make sure that it’s flexible. It’s impossible to know everything that could happen. You may find opportunities that you were unaware of. Your plan is to help you make the most of things, not hold you back from the experience of a lifetime.
